The Death of Firewire?

There is no Firewire port on the new MacBooks announced today, and only one, a Firewire 800 port, on the MacBook Pro. Both models have two USB 2 ports. I’ve seen Firewire 400 to 800 cables. Perhaps a Wireless Firewire adapter is in the offing?

The MacBook lineup has been streamlined. There are basically two models in addition to the Air: the 13-inch MacBook and the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Just one color: brushed aluminum. The 17-inch has not been updated, and along with the old plastic MacBook are just holdovers, like the iPod Classic. It looks to me like Apple wants users to buy the new $900 Cinema Display, which has been redesigned to match the black and aluminum styling of the new MacBooks (and the iMac). Frankly, I’d probably save $400 and get a decent-looking monitor from Dell.

This seems to be all everyone is talking about at Electronista. As Fresh-Faced Recruit notes, “As a support technician, I really am worried about the departure of Firewire. It is rare if more than a few days pass without using Firewire target disk mode. I guess new techniques will be developed to replace this tried and true method; but at the moment, I can’t think of what they will be.”
